I set some ambitious goals for 2023, and I’m clear about the small steps I need to take to move me in the direction I want to go. But as I take those steps, I hear a voice inside my head that’s not helping me. In fact, it sounds like it’s working against me! Do you know that voice? The voice of The Resistance?
“The more important a call or action to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.” ~ Steven Pressfield
This year, when The Resistance whispers in my ear about how warm the bed is and how cold the pool will be, I’m ready.
See, The Resistance is just a thought. That voice of temptation in my head is my voice. I can change it.
So when I hear, “You don’t have to go swimming, the pool is cold, and the bed is warm. You deserve more sleep.”
I can respond with, “When I swim first thing in the morning, I feel great, my head is clear, and I get more done during the day. I’m a swimmer; I’m going swimming.”
Or when a reminder pops up that I need to follow up with a prospect I’ve been talking to, and the voice in my head says, “You’re following up with her again? What are you, some kind of stalker? Wait a week; give her some space!”
I respond with, “I’m too professional to put this off – I’m someone who follows up when I said I would. The last conversation with her was great fun, and I’m sure this one will be valuable for both of us!”
On Thursday, I have some practical ideas for how to beat The Resistance, but until then, listen carefully for the voice of The Resistance. Can you spot the lies it’s telling? What do you want to say back?
