Can we talk about making more money?

By Brad Farris Leave a Comment

In the almost 20 years I’ve been working with business owners one of the most frequent desires/needs/dreams/goals that I hear from business owners is that they want to make more money. So, I want to have a real talk about making more money. Maybe it’s crass, perhaps it’s too straightforward — but it’s on your mind (and mine) so let’s talk about it!

Do you want to make more money in 2019?

Is that a goal of yours? If it is, I’d like to help you with that goal.

It is my firm commitment to everyone in this conversation that I will do my best to help you make more money in 2019.

But, before we get all fired up about taking over the world, I have a question. If it really is a goal of yours to make more money in 2019 I have to ask you; why is that your goal?

Take a minute before you read on — ask yourself — why do I want to make more money?

I did this recently with some clients and here are some answers I heard:

  • “If I had more money I could really grow this business!”
  • “I could make a bigger impact, make a bigger difference.”
  • “I could take that vacation I’ve always wanted.”
  • “I would be confident that I could send my kids to college.”
  • “I could fund the NFP work I’ve been committed to…”
  • “Making more money would validate all the hard work, all the sacrifices. It would mean I made it!”

Do you see what I see in those answers?

What we want isn’t really more money. What we truly want is:

  • What the money brings
  • What the money can enable
  • What the money means

So, let’s get real with one another.

Why do you want to make more money? What does that money bring? What does it enable? What does it mean?

Get specific. Get clear. Be 100% true to yourself about what it is you want. Don’t self-edit because you feel like you shouldn’t want what you want.

Money is stupid; it’s just paper, or numbers on a page—unless you go for it driven by something meaningful to you, you’ll never significantly move the needle.

So I ask you, what are you TRULY working for?

Fair warning: this is the first in a long string of emails about making money. If you are game for this conversation, you are in the right place. In fact, if you don’t want to make more money in 2019, I encourage you to unsubscribe from this conversation. I know I’m not that funny, so you aren’t here for the entertainment, right?

Let’s get to work.

Take out a piece of paper and spend some time thinking about what you are working for, about what that money will mean, or bring or enable. Ask yourself why this is the thing, go deep down in your gut, WHY!

Then post that paper under your monitor or on your office wall where you can see it and refer to it as we go through this process together. Snap a picture and send it to me if you want extra accountability. This WILL be on the test! I’m asking you about it later.
