What do my happiest clients have in common?
Every Friday, I step back and look at all of my active clients and ask myself the question, “How’s it going with this client? How can I serve them this week?”
As I was doing this last week, I noticed a trend, and it surprised me!
The clients that are the happiest with their work, their business growth, and their life had all made similar moves in the last 3 – 5 months.
They started doing less.
Each of them had focused on what they can get off of their plate and systematically moved work to their teams, in many cases hiring new team members to take on tasks or responsibilities that they had previously owned.
We worked together to create measurements so that they don’t need to be constantly overseeing every move that these new staff made – instead, they started running the business “by the numbers.” By reviewing their dashboard each week, they knew what areas of the business needed their attention!
Now they spend more time thinking, planning, and coaching
Getting out of the day to day made more room for thinking. Instead of worrying about what needs to be done, they think about “What should we be doing?”
Instead of scrambling to meet client deadlines, they can better understand what their most profitable clients look like and make deliberate moves to get more of them.
They were used to jumping in to fight fires; now they were coaching their team members without taking on the responsibility to do the work!
“My goal is no longer to get more done, but rather to have less to do” – Francine Jay
