I was at a holiday party last month, and it was full of agency owners. As I walked through the crowd, I must have heard this snippet of conversation a dozen times.
“How are you?”
“Oh, I’m so busy, just slammed. It’s really overwhelming…”
Each time I heard it, I got more disturbed.
Why do you want to advertise yourself as busy? Is that an indicator of success?
You own your own business. You have people working for you. Why do you want to tell your peers that you are “busy?”
But I also get it
Driving home, I was still thinking about how often I heard people talk about their busyness, and I started to think about times in my life when I was “busy.”
- Times when I let other people set my agenda.
- When I wasn’t setting good boundaries between work and the rest of my life.
- The anxiety I was living with – trying to prove my worth by accomplishing more.
- How unclear my priorities were – I didn’t have a clear view of my job roles or how to excel at them.
Thinking through that, it didn’t feel great; those weren’t times in my life that I would now describe as thriving! But when I was running from one meeting to another and trying to keep 47 plates in the air, I didn’t have any time to reflect on that!
If you’re starting to see how being “busy” might be keeping you from the things you really want instead of getting you closer, Jill Salzman and I are going to be talking about our journeys away from busyness on TUES, JAN 24, 2023 at 11A CT/12P ET/ 9A PT
